Security and the cloud. These are two words that must be considered in the same breath. Many people use cloud already, whether they know it or not. But for those who are already in the cloud – or those looking to move to it – I implore you to do it right. What does that mean?
One of the most common scenarios we see is that clients don’t realize how much or how little exposure they have, and it’s only when it’s too late or they have been hacked that they start to ask the important questions.
Just this morning, I was working on moving a client’s website from one of the big discount web hosts to a dedicated cloud server that we spun up in our fully HIPAA/PCI compliant data center. This particular client needed to secure their web hosting and guarantee the data was isolated onto its own server. We set them up with an isolated, dedicated cloud server which has full security and is backed by a team of security experts. Their web server is now secured. We know for a fact that the server and SQL server have their own, secure and dedicated space where there is no possibility of other customers’ data residing on the same server.
I was actually able to connect to their previous provider’s instance of SQL server and not only could I see the names of EVERY other customer’s database, I could easily identify many of the websites and – were I a hacker – could have started attempting to pry into them. Not only that…but do you really want your applications running alongside nearly 500 other databases? Yes, you heard it right, there were nearly 500 databases running on the same server!
