We like to spread good advice here at To Solution, and we’re in the business of keeping your systems running at optimum speeds.  When your computer speed has declined and it’s impacting your productivity, there are a number of things you can do to speed it up.

Remove Unnecessary Start-up Items

  • From your desktop, with no programs running, click the Start button and select ‘run’.
  • Type ‘msconfig’ and hit Enter.
  • Click on the ‘Startup’ tab.
  • Go through the list and look for anything that you know does not need to be running all the time.  For instance – anything that says Adobe, Google, ITunes, Roxio, or any other software that is specific to a particular workstation and not needed constantly (such as things labeled Intel, Java, anything to do with Symantec or other A/V programs, and back-up programs.

The Sysinfo Website has a huge and extremely comprehensive listing of just about any startup program you might find in your MSCONFIG list.

Give Windows A Boost

  • Right-click on the ‘My Computer’ icon on the desktop and select ‘Properties’(in some cases you will have to click the Start button and right-click on ‘My Computer’ from there).
  • Click on the ‘Advanced’ tab, click on ‘Settings’ under Performance.
  • Select ‘Adjust for best performance’, click apply and okay.

NOTE: This tip will disable your Windows “theme” and return you to the old Windows 95/98-looking screen.

Remove Unwanted Software

  • Click the Start button, select ‘run, type ‘appwiz.cpl’ and hit enter.
  • Go through the list of installed applications that pops up and uninstall all superfluous programs paying special attention to anything labeled “toolbar”.

Use Tools To Help Optimize Your Computer

  • Download and install a  program called CCleaner from http://www.filehippo.com/download_ccleaner and click ‘Download Latest Version’ in the upper right-hand corner of the web page. When installing – select language, I Agree, leave Destination Folder as is and select next, uncheck ‘automatically check for updates’, click install, finish.
  • When you run the program there are only two things we want to do:  Cleaner and Registry.  By default when the program is loaded, the Registry Section is selected.  Click on ‘Analyze’ and then, when it is done analyzing, click on ‘run cleaner’(click OK when it asks you if you are sure you want to proceed).
  • Next click on the Registry tab, click ‘Scan for Issues’.  When it is done scanning click on ‘Fix selected issues’, click ‘No’, click ‘Fix All Selected Issues’, click ‘Close’.
  • Repeat this last step(Scan for issues and Fix issues) a second time.
  • Close CCleaner.

The above steps are a good start to getting your PC back in shape!  If you have questions or need professional assistance with your desktop environment, contact To Solution at (262) 737-4774 today to speak with us.
